When will the fate of Karachi be decided?

More than a week has passed since the local body elections in Karachi, but the situation is still not clear as to which party will be the mayor of Karachi? Both People’s Party and Jamaat-e-Islami are claiming that the mayor will belong to their party. Due to the lack of simple majority, manipulation continues.

Under the new local government system, there are 246 union committees in the city, while the number of seats is 367 after 121 seats reserved for youth, labour, transgender, women and minority. According to the results released so far, the People’s Party is at the first position with 91 seats, Jamaat-e-Islami is at the second position with 89 seats and Tehreek-e-Insaf is at the third position with 40 seats. While Jamaat-e-Islami has claimed 6 seats and Tehreek-e-Insaf 4 seats and has filed an application against the alleged manipulation of the results.

In the current situation, no party can make a mayor alone. The PPP delegation visited the center of Jamaat-e-Islami and also offered a conditional alliance, which has not yet progressed. Similarly, Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman also visited their center to discuss with Tehreek-e-Insaaf. It would have been better if the decision of the election of the mayor was also in the hands of the people, then there would be no need for manipulation by political parties and there would not have been a storm of misbehavior on social media. Now is the time to decide the fate of Karachi and the sooner the decision is made the better. MQM boycotted these elections which they should not have done.

If the governors of Karachi are reviewed in the past, Nimatullah Khan and Mustafa Kamal proved to be good mayors for this city. As Jamaat-e-Islami is already heavily involved in welfare activities, it will not face much difficulties after the mayorship. Although now with the increase in the number of political parties and the birth of new parties across the country, the policy seems to be that no one will get a simple majority. Whether it is city government, provincial or central government, the mixed form of government has to be chosen. Therefore, if the three major parties of the city are sincere with the city, then they have to get rid of their egos and go together.

Tehreek-e-Insaf and Jamaat-e-Islami have been ideal allies in the past and the manner in which their alliance ended was excellent. Tehreek-e-Insaf and Jamaat-e-Islami never openly opposed each other. The leadership has never accused each other, while Jamaat-e-Islami and People’s Party have gained votes by opposing each other. Therefore, the alliance of People’s Party and Jamaat-e-Islami will be unnatural and will not last long. People associated with Jamaat-e-Islami social media say on different platforms that Hafiz Naeemur Rehman should not be given advice, he will decide on his own. Such things are a reflection of dictatorial thinking. Every citizen campaigning and voting for Jamaat-e-Islami has full right to advise Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman and Jamaat-e-Islami and express his wishes.

In case of alliance between Jamaat-e-Islami and Tehreek-e-Insaf, the mayor of Jamaat-e-Islami will be easily elected in the city. It is also being put in the minds of the people that if this happens, the Sindh government will not release the funds, so how will the work be done? This thinking is also just a reflection of slave mentality. City government fund cannot be withheld under any circumstances. The specific fund has to be paid to the provincial government in all cases. Now it is about the final stages, suppose Tehreek-e-Insaf and Jamaat-e-Islami unite, Jamaat-e-Islami also brings its own mayor and the city government is in a position to do the best work in Karachi with its own funds. Go? Should they be separated? Absolutely not, it is very important that all the stakeholders of the city work together for the betterment of the city. Jamaat-e-Islami should be given mayorship based on past experiences, but both People’s Party and Tehreek-e-Insaf should be its allies and work together for the betterment of the city. Go ahead. This city can no longer afford hatred, strife or riots. Let’s all work together now for growth, success, prosperity and peace in this city.

Due to having seats of the three parties, the trend of positive competition should also be created in the union committees and the elected members should try to make their union committees a model area. Karachi now wants development, Karachi now wants peace, Karachi now wants unity. If anyone still stands in the way of the restoration and development of Karachi, let the people of the city know that they are not theirs.
