In recent days, the news regarding the peace and order of Gwadar kept circulating on social media. The reason for these news was once again Maulana Hidayatur Rehman and his associates of ‘Gwadar Ko Haq Du’ movement, who once again sat down for their demands. However, this time the sit-in was not peaceful and this time the writ of the state and the law was challenged. In response to which Balochistan government also gave a strong response. There were arrests, even Section 144 was imposed in Gwadar, while mobile service and internet were also shut down.
It has been the misfortune of Balochistan that this region, rich in natural resources, has remained backward due to political and personal grudges, differences and interests since the establishment of Pakistan. Suffering from poverty and terrorism, this province is fighting for its right to own its resources. There is resentment, disappointment, inferiority complex and deprivation among the residents of this province.
There are many rhetorics of our political leadership regarding peace and order, construction and development projects of the province, but when it comes to practical measures, the result is not what Balochistan expects. For this reason, the distance between Balochistan and the Federation, which has existed since the beginning, is still present and the steps taken to reduce these distances are insufficient. Due to this displeasure, various separatist movements came into existence here, which are looking for national security and peace by becoming a tool of the enemy country.
The Economic Corridor agreement between Pakistan and China is expected to improve and change the situation in Balochistan. But there are reservations about Balochistan, especially about Gwadar, which is of key importance in the economic corridor project.
Gwadar, a warm water and deep sea port located on the edge of the Arabian Sea in the southwest of Balochistan, is of global interest due to its unique geographical location. In 2015, China-Pakistan Economic Corridor “CPEC” project was decided between Pakistan and China. Under this project, the activities from Gwadar port were started from 13th November 2016 and the project was termed as a game changer. But according to local politicians, Gwadar still lacks basic facilities like electricity, gas and water.
In such a situation last year, the ‘Right to Gwadar’ movement, the main demands of which are the prevention of illegal fishing from Balochistan’s maritime boundaries, recovery of missing persons, elimination of drugs from Makran including Gwadar, security forces at check posts. And Gwadar City’s core issues include initiatives, got a lot of popularity.
This protest sit-in for the rights of Gwadar also got attention at the national level and their negotiations with the Balochistan government proved to be successful. However, suddenly this year Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman’s ‘Haq du Gwadar’ movement again protested and alleged that their demands were not met. But this time, surprisingly, the protest was not peaceful but turned violent.
It is sad that when this matter can be resolved in an atmosphere of dialogue, dialogue and understanding, then challenging the state writ, sabotaging peace and closing the Gwadar port is not irresponsible. .
Shah Dad Baloch, who is a resident of Gwadar, told about the situation in Gwadar that now the situation in Gwadar is completely normal while the mobile network and internet have also been restored, while the fishermen are also going to the sea for their hunting. At some places, police and levies are present in large numbers so that in case of any untoward incident, it can be dealt with immediately.
Regarding the ‘Gwadar Ko Haq Du’ movement, he says that accusations are made against Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman that he is actually doing all this for the sake of power. Because it has been a year and a half of their movement, no significant difference has been seen, except that there has been relaxation in the matter of check posts. As for the fishing trawler, it is the same as before. But it is also a fact that there is a large number of people with Maulana and his movement is popularly accepted because the people of Gwadar are angry about the loss of their rights.
All stakeholders should sit together for Gwadar. Peaceful protest is everyone’s right, but don’t hurt people and don’t damage government property. Gwadar is a very sensitive area. Chinese people also live here and there are also people from abroad. There have been security issues with CPEC in the past, so security of the region is of utmost importance. Shah Dad says that in the ongoing protest by Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman, government properties were damaged, stones were pelted, and the gates of government offices were burnt. This is very wrong behavior. Hence the crackdown also happened and the people faced problems.
