Gas safety. How to use gas and combined stoves correctly

There are gas stoves in almost every kitchen – both in apartments and in private houses. Despite all the advantages of such technology, do not forget about security measures. A gas leak poses a great danger – in an apartment building, your neighbors can also suffer. How to use gas and combined stoves – in this material.

Rules for the safe use of gas burners
A gas or combination stove is a technique exclusively for cooking.

Do not use hotplates for heating or drying. First, when the gas is completely burned, carbon dioxide is released into the air, which lowers the oxygen concentration. Because of this, methane begins to pass through the path of incomplete combustion, resulting in the formation of dangerous carbon monoxide. With periodic use of the stove, all this is not dangerous. However, if you use gas burners almost around the clock, without high-quality ventilation in the room, the concentration of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide will increase. This will lead to dizziness and feeling unwell due to lack of oxygen.

Secondly, drying things over an open flame is unacceptable – this can lead to a fire hazard. Do not mount any towel racks and so on above the stove.

Do not forget that even short-term use of the stove leads to a change in temperature and humidity in the room.

Do not use the burners without the cookware installed. The fact is that the stove produces a lot of heat. Ascending hot air flows can deform individual parts of the hood or lead to overheating of the electronics, especially if the installation height requirements are violated.

Another problem is the ignition of fat deposits in the hood. For example, in 2019, due to the ignition of sediments, one of the catering establishments in Moscow broke out . At home, the risk of such an incident is minimal, but it is present.

Do not leave flammable items near the stove. In the heat of cooking, some may place a plastic bottle of oil, napkins or paper towels on the stove (God forbid) or very close to it. Even if the gas is not turned on, this is absolutely impossible to do.

Control the burner flame. The gas should burn almost silently with a blue color interspersed with purple. The flames must be uniform in all directions. If the picture differs from the one described, there are problems.

The cause of the wrong flame can be:

incomplete combustion of gas due to insufficient air;
dirty burners;
inappropriate equipment;
poor quality gas.
To solve the first problem, it is necessary to provide high-quality ventilation in the room. In case of contamination of the burner, the gas nozzles can be cleaned independently, having previously disconnected the gas supply from the stove.

But some problems with setting up equipment are best solved exclusively with the help of specialized specialists. This also applies to the installation of plates. If you want to know more about the installation of hobs, we tell you in detail.

Rules for the safe use of a gas oven
Despite the wide functionality of electric ovens, many manufacturers install gas ovens in stoves. They are considered more economical, but require compliance with certain safety rules (like electric ones ).

The basic operating rules are the same as for burners – do not leave flammable objects inside, do not use the oven to heat the room and control the color of the flame. However, the instructions for gas stoves additionally indicate other measures that most users simply do not know about.
Observe the interval between unsuccessful ignition attempts. It happens that it is not possible to light a flame in the oven the first time. In the case of hotplates, you can usually try again immediately. However, after several attempts, ventilation must be done in the working chamber of the gas oven. Also, if the fire is not ignited within 10 seconds, the next attempt can be made in at least a minute.

Be careful when cooking certain foods. We are talking about dishes with the addition of alcohol-containing drinks. For example, alcohol gives baked goods airiness, as it reduces the stickiness of flour. Alcohol vapors at a certain concentration can ignite in the working chamber, so manufacturers recommend not to get involved in the use of such drinks.

This also applies if you clean the working chamber with ammonia. After that, be sure to wash the oven with detergent and ventilate thoroughly.

Do not pour water into a hot cooking chamber. On the network you can find tips according to which, along with baking, you need to put a small container of water in the oven. Indeed – increasing the humidity allows you to make the crust more crispy. Some electric stoves even have a corresponding function.

However, in no case should you put or even pour water into an already heated chamber. Uncontrolled formation of steam can lead to damage to the enamel, which is what the manufacturers say in the instructions. This also applies when you are cleaning with steam.

Be careful with baking utensils. The use of baking paper or aluminum foil is not prohibited. But these materials must be properly handled. Firstly, if you are using parchment paper for a baking sheet, carefully select the size. If the edges protrude strongly beyond the perimeter, there is a risk of fire. For aluminum foil, you should not be afraid – the ignition temperature is 660 ° C. But if you do not want to spoil the dish, also properly stack the material.

The aluminum foil must not touch the glass window of the door. Some manufacturers note that this can lead to discoloration of the glass and loss of its transparency.

Secondly, all these accessories are strictly forbidden to be placed in the bottom area or on the walls of the working chamber, even if they are not flammable. This will lead to improper heat accumulation, uneven heating of the dish and potential damage to the enamel.

Be sure to read the instructions before using the complete trays. For example, some of them do not need to be pushed all the way during cooking – this impairs air circulation. In other ovens, the grilling tray must be placed in the appropriate position when grilling, for example, on levels 1-3, otherwise it may become deformed from the heat at levels 4-5. But you can install the grille in any of the positions.
