In recent years, domestic developers have produced many notable video games. They were accompanied by either local success – like “The Man-Ear”, The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante, “Blitzkrieg 3”. Or world – remember the two parts of Pathfinder and Loop Hero. There are also quite a few potentially interesting projects on the horizon: Atomic Heart, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, Mechanoids 3… We’ll tell you what to keep an eye on.
Release: Q1 2023 (PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series)
Atomic Heart is the most anticipated domestic game, judging by the excitement in the press and among the players. It’s a first-person shooter with the scope of an AAA blockbuster.
Studio Mundfish will take you to the alternative USSR of the mid-1950s. At one of the factories, robots get out of control, a KGB agent equipped with a miracle glove is sent to calm them down.
Atomic Heart at one time intrigued the global audience with its original visual style. Her trailers with Soviet music collected millions of views. The soundtrack for the game is composed by Mick Gordon, composer of Doom (2016) and Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014).
Expectations are extremely high, but Mundfish pushes the release date over and over again. We hope that Atomic Heart will still go on sale in early 2023.
Release: February 2023 (Early Access on PC; later on PS4, Xbox One, Switch)
Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 20 million copies. This forced developers from different countries, including Russia, to take a closer look at the cyberpunk setting.
The authors of Gripper, inspired by the anime “Akira” (1988), invented an action/RPG about an avenger on a bike. In disassembly, the hero uses a motorcycle … like a horse – spins around enemies and “bites” them with a hook-cat. A dashing drift in the field of view of a huge boss is commonplace here, a way to survive, not to show off.
The Day Before
Release: March 1, 2023 (PC; later PS5 and Xbox Series)
Steam has a rating that takes into account the number of users who have added games to their wishlist. Now it is headed by Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield and The Day Before hailing from Yakutia.
Interest in The Day Before is easy to explain. Here is a “graphic” game in the popular genre – a multiplayer shooter / “survival”. The closest landmark is The Division. The place of action, by the way, is also the USA. The country is devastated after the pandemic, zombies roam the cities. The remains of products from supermarkets are taken away by hunters for prey. Naturally, they are well armed and ready to fight back both zombies and survivor competitors.
The Fntastic studio wanted to release the project in the current 2022, but changed its mind. It’s all about the engine change. The Day Before will use the advanced graphics technologies Epic has built into Unreal Engine 5.
Release: 2023 (PC)
Torn Away is an adventure game inspired by the diaries of Soviet children from the World War II era. The main character, the girl Asya, must escape from a German labor camp to her native Stalingrad.
During the Second World War, the Nazis forcibly took people out of the occupied territories of the USSR and used them as low-paid labor. They were called Ostarbeiters.
Asya is also an Ostarbeiter. She has a long (through Germany and Poland) and dangerous way home. Indika is an adventure game about a nun kicked out of a convent and a devout prisoner who escaped from prison. The basis of the gameplay will be puzzles, both characters will be controlled.
Indika has two features – decent graphics quality (for a small studio) and an unusual setting. Adventure shows an alternative Russia of the late 19th century: with an admixture of fairy-tale motifs and supernatural devilry.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader
Release: 2023 (PC)
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is an adaptation of the popular board game. Games Workshop, which owns the brand, entrusted the license to Owlcat Games – she loudly declared herself thanks to the Pathfinder duology.
Not much is known about the W40K: Rogue Trader. In general, this is a classic RPG with a party of heroes, an isometric perspective and turn-based combat. You will find yourself on the edge of the galaxy, where you will encounter xenos (hostile extraterrestrial intelligent beings) and cultists – followers of the gods of Chaos.
In parallel with W40K: Rogue Trader, the Russian team is working on the second set of add-ons for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. They promise to add a new class, location and story missions to the role-playing game.
“Mechanoids: War Protocol”
Release: 2023 (PC)
What is a mechanoid? Computer in a ball-capsule. By itself, the ball is not able to move. He needs a glider, a flying machine like the race car from the first episode of Star Wars. Mechanoids live on the planet Polygon-4. Here they form clans, trade, work as couriers, participate in skirmishes.
The first parts of the Mechanoids series came out in the mid-2000s. They fell in love with domestic players for the freedom of action and the excitement of exploring the mysterious world.
The rights to Mechanoids belong to 1C. A few years ago, Bulat Dautov, screenwriter and lead game designer of the dilogy, announced a triquel, Mechanoids: War Protocol, with the approval of the copyright holder. In terms of gameplay, it repeats its predecessors. The project was funded (and continues to be supported) by fans from the very beginning – through Patreon and Boosty, plus an investor was found. In addition to Dautov, audio designer and composer Grigory Semenov, also well known to fans of the franchise, joined Mechanoids 3. Well, at least the plot and music will not let you down!
In 2021, the indie games sector was shaken up by the text-based RPG The Life and Suffering of Mr. Branté. She offered an intelligent, and most importantly, well-written history, cleansed of any graphomania.
In Brant, the action took place in a world stylized as the Middle Ages, where rigid class division created many problems. Mother of All Secrets, a new RPG from the authors of “Brante”, is more intimate: the entire space is limited to the building of an orphanage. However, there are many secrets in this house.
The main theme of Mother of All Secrets is the occult. The hero, a pupil of the orphanage, will be prepared for a meeting with some important guest within two weeks. During this time, it is necessary to properly study the building and get along with its residents.
The hero of The Bookwalker has an amazing ability – he “dives” into books and finds himself in the worlds described on their pages. Each dimension exists according to its own laws. There, the character obtains various artifacts and “drags” into our reality. Fortunately, the demand for things like Thor’s hammer on the black market is great.
It is interesting that the episodes in the ordinary world are made in the first person, in the other world – in isometry. You have to solve riddles here and there.
The Bookwalker intrigues with the potential dissimilarity of locations to each other. Experience also speaks in favor of the developers from Do My Best Games – behind them is the curious “survival” The Final Station (2016).
Slavania depicts fabulous medieval Russia. With thickets full of monsters.
Slavania is forged in 2D with a classic side view. The hero of the epic – more precisely, the game – hunts down goblin and other monsters. It tracks down, that is, painstakingly collects information and attacks after thorough preparation.
The gameplay combines elements of “soullike” (difficult fights) and metroidvania (tangled map). The character gradually unlocks skills that help in combat and in moving around locations.
Ash of Gods: Redemption is a role-playing game with turn-based tactical battles. The conversations in it are designed in the manner of a visual novel: static pictures alternate. The soundtrack is composed by Adam Skorupa, who is involved in The Witcher series. Due to cartoonish graphics and some other elements, the project is often compared to The Banner Saga trilogy. Nevertheless, there are enough differences between the games, the most obvious is the setting: the Middle Ages instead of the Scandinavian theme.
AurumDust is not ready to start a full-fledged sequel to Ash of Gods: Redemption. Instead, she’s busy with Ash of Gods: The Way, a story-driven card-fighting game. Although the events take place after Redemption, this is by no means a direct continuation. If gamers support The Way with a ruble, then the domestic studio will take on Ash of Gods: Redemption 2.
In our article, we have listed 11 expected games. Honorable Mentions also deserve Revival: Recolonization, Spire of Sorcery, Tartaria: The Forgotten Tale, Feral Blue, Age of Water… What projects would you add to the selection? Share in the comments!
