Built-in appliances look attractive and offer a lot of design options, but installing them is more difficult than freestanding. A gas hob is no exception: some features should be taken into account when installing and connecting it.
The gas hob cuts into the kitchen countertop, and the first thing to do before installing it is to correctly mark the hole. Each type of built-in appliances has two sets of dimensions: regular dimensions (height, width, depth) and embedding dimensions. The latter refer to the dimensions of the niche in which the equipment will be installed. Embedding dimensions are given in the documentation.
When marking, do not forget that the dimensions of the panel itself are larger than the marked hole.
To estimate the distance from the edge of the panel to a backsplash or other obstacles, measure the dimensions of the panel and mark it on the countertop with an erasable marker or pencil. The edge between the built-in part and the edge of the slab is usually the same on all sides, but not always. On some models, the built-in part may be offset from the center of the panel – check this before marking.
As a rule, the dimensions of the embedding according to the documentation are slightly larger than the real ones – this is done so that the surface freely enters the opening. In addition, on many models, the built-in part adjoins the top panel not at a right angle, but with some rounding – the opening is deliberately enlarged so that this rounding does not lift the panel above the table top.

Preparing the installation site
Cut out the opening according to the markup.
After cutting the opening, make sure that there is enough space under it for the built-in part and for the passage of communications (gas and electricity). Keep in mind that it will not work to place a cabinet or other built-in appliances directly under the gas surface – even if the thickness of the built-in part is less than the thickness of the countertop, you still need to leave space for communications – gas and electricity supply.
Be sure to specify the depth of embedding the gas surface and the location of the supplies before designing the kitchen.
Often the gas hob is located above the built-in oven. In this case, keep in mind that many built-in “ovens” require you to leave some space above its body for ventilation. Make sure that the wires and the gas hose do not touch the body of the oven – it can get very hot during operation. Based on the above, it is better if there is a gap of 5-10 cm under the built-in panel.
Gas hobs with electric ignition function require an electrical connection. Provide an outlet for its connection. Please note that it does not interfere with other elements of the kitchen. The socket will be used all the time, so it is better to install it in an inconspicuous place – for example, inside a cabinet.
Connecting the gas surface to the gas is usually done using a flexible connection – you will need to buy it separately. It can be rubber or steel corrugated, but in any case it must be a specialized gas connecting hose with a certificate of conformity.
Save the documents for the sleeve – they will be required when connecting the surface by the gas service specialists.
The rubber hose can be connected directly to the gas pipe, but when using a steel hose, a dielectric insert must be installed between it and the gas pipe.
This is important both to protect the gas pipe from accidentally hitting it with electricity from the surface, and vice versa – to protect the surface from electricity that somehow ended up on the pipe.
The connecting hose must be long enough to run freely from the gas pipe to the surface. The tightness of the sleeve, as well as its kinks and pinches, are not allowed.
Installation and connection of the gas hose must be carried out by certified specialists. But to save time and money, you can pre-lay the hose yourself. The main thing is not to open the gas valve until all connections are checked by the gas service.
Don’t forget about gaskets on threaded connections.
Keep in mind that all connections and piping must be accessible for inspection along their entire length. Therefore, it is not necessary to install the surface immediately. Leave all connections open, prepare gas surface certificates with connecting sleeve and invite the gas service.
The visit of the “gas workers” will be paid, but there are no other options.
Connection of any gas equipment to the gas pipeline and its launch are carried out only by specialized organizations. Violation of these requirements will lead to high fines and disconnection of the home from gas.
If everything is done correctly, the visit of the gas service will last 10-15 minutes. The specialist will check all connections for leaks.
He will also check the documentation for gas equipment, open the gas valve and check the operation of all burners. After that, an act on the replacement of gas equipment will be drawn up.
If you are going to use the gas surface not with main gas, but with liquefied gas from cylinders or your own tank, then you do not need to call the gas service. The gas is yours, so the responsibility is entirely on you.
In this case, check the tightness of the connections yourself by opening the gas cock and thoroughly coating all connections with soapy water. After making sure that no bubbles form anywhere, reinstall the panel. When using liquefied gas, you will need to replace the jets (nozzles) of the burners. Usually they come with a surface and have a slightly smaller gas hole (liquefied has more pressure).
Unscrew the old jets with a socket wrench and install new ones by screwing in as far as they will go. Replace the burners (usually they have a hole for the ignition electrode and are placed in only one position), close them with lids and install the grate.Fastening
A set of fasteners is usually included with the gas surface, but it is not necessary to use it.
And in the case of ceramic and glass surfaces, this is completely undesirable. The fact is that a rigid factory mount is easy to overtighten, while tension appears on the glass, which can lead to cracking of the surface if handled carelessly. Another factor is that the countertop can deform over time. Imperceptibly, by 1-2 mm, but if the surface is fixed “tightly”, stress will again arise in it – with the same possible outcome. Therefore, it is better to fix most glass and ceramic surfaces with double-sided tape or simply with sanitary sealant.
Apply sealant to the edge of the opening, gently lower the gas surface into the opening, align it with the edge of the countertop, gently wipe off excess sealant with a clean rag and leave to dry for 24 hours. After that, the gas surface can be used.
