We find out why the hood does not pull: reverse thrust, filter cleaning and route laying

Over time, the cooker hood starts to work worse. And it happens that even a recently installed device for some reason does not pull. We understand the causes of poor traction and find out whether it is possible to solve this on our own, without involving specialists.

How the hood works is described in detail in our selection guide . You can understand that the draft is reduced by the remaining smell of cooking, smoke during the operation of the hood. Another easy way is with a napkin. Turn on the hood and bring a paper napkin to the grate: with normal draft, it should not fall. If it still falls, you need to check the device. Here are the most common causes of poor traction.

Clogged filters
Before going into the ventilation, the air passes through the filter system on the hood body. First – a metal mesh of a grease trap, then – filters made of synthetic fiber and carbon.

Depending on the configuration, the hood may not have a carbon or synthetic filter. But, as a rule, you can buy them and install them yourself. Coal – strictly to your model. Synthetic is versatile and cut to fit the grid.

Over time, the filters are logically clogged with grease and dust. The grease trap requires cleaning as it gets dirty. The easiest way is to send it to the dishwasher. However, before that, you need to study the instructions for the device and find out if it is possible to clean the mesh in this way. If this is prohibited or you do not have a dishwasher, you can go the other way. You will need citric acid, baking soda, and dishwashing liquid.

In a large container – a basin, pan or bath – pour boiling water over the level so that the filter is completely immersed in water.
Add 50 grams of citric acid, 100 grams of soda and six tablespoons of dishwashing detergent. Mix it all well so that the dishwashing liquid dissolves.
Dip the filter in this mixture and leave it for at least eight hours, preferably overnight.
After the time has elapsed, rinse well under running warm water, brushing off the remaining fat with a soft brush.
It is worth washing the grease filter at least once a month with regular use of the hood. Otherwise, it will be much more difficult to wash off the adhering layers of fat.

Carbon and synthetic filters require a complete replacement after the expiration date recommended in the instructions for the device.

Errors when installing the hood
If the hood pulls poorly almost or immediately after connection, it may simply be installed incorrectly. It is worth checking the exhaust line, especially if you mounted it yourself.

As a rule, a factory corrugation for connection is supplied with the device. But it is better to immediately replace it with a plastic round or rectangular pipe, suitable in diameter for the outlet of the hood.

If you have an incorrectly selected pipe for the route and a narrowing adapter is installed, this can cause air circulation problems. To correctly calculate the cross section of suitable channels, you can use the formula:

Even a few centimeters of difference can greatly affect the throughput of the channel.

It is also worth remembering that excessive pipe bends also slow down the movement of air, especially if the turns go one after another without areas for air acceleration.

Squeezing and damage to the track
If unpleasant food odors appear during operation of the hood, the corrugation is most likely pinched or damaged. Most often this happens due to the fact that the ventilation pipe is full of dishes, jars, unnecessary vases and other items that put pressure on the corrugation.

The solution, accordingly, is very simple – unload the pipe, remove all unnecessary and check again. If the traction is still bad, the corrugation may have been broken, and you will have to disassemble the structure and change the corrugation.

The connection of pipe elements with adhesive tape, glue and other leaky and poor-quality methods, even during the installation of the hood, can also cause poor traction in the future at the slightest pressure and vibration.

For normal operation, the hood needs forced ventilation, since the device takes air from the room, and it needs to take fresh air somewhere. If both the windows and the door are closed in the kitchen, and a separate supply ventilation is not installed, then the adjacent ventilation between the kitchen and the bathroom can become an air source. To improve the draft of the device will help the installation of industrial supply ventilation, or at least slightly opening the window during its operation.

There may also be problems with general house ventilation. If you are sure that all filters are cleaned and replaced, the route is in good condition, it is worth checking the condition of the general house ventilation. When clogging the shaft, reverse thrust may work. And even if you checked the shaft during installation, it could become clogged later. For example, due to the illegal redevelopment of neighbors or improper design, in which garbage, birds and rodents get into it.

It is forbidden to clean the common house mine on your own. To carry out this procedure, you must contact your management company.

If you find any faults in the track, it may be better to contact specialists. However, before that, try to clean and replace the filters, and also check if the corrugation is not transferred by heavy cans from above.
