How to choose a compact electric stove

Sometimes, instead of a trendy hob, you need to purchase a small compact electric stove. And it doesn’t matter – you need it for rare use in the country or for constant home cooking – you can choose a fully functional device.

Small table tiles in certain situations become a real salvation. Sometimes electric stoves are in gasified apartments as a fallback in case of a gas shutdown. This is a great solution for those who live in cramped conditions, when there is nowhere to put large kitchen appliances – for example, in dorm rooms or apartments that are not equipped with a spacious kitchen. Compact stoves are an excellent option in country houses and cottages, where a full-fledged stove with an oven is simply not needed.

Light weight, modest size, absolute mobility and ease of storage, combined with classic functionality – these are the most important features of desktop electric stoves.

Number and size of burners
With the number of burners in compact tiles, everything is simple: one or two. The number of heating zones logically affects the dimensions of the appliance: single-burner stoves are the smallest, and it is convenient to take them with you on the road or put them where there is no free space at all. At the same time, two-burner ones still allow you to speed up the cooking of dinner: while cutlets are fried on one burner, pasta is already being cooked on the other.

The diameter of the burners is important for using cookware of different diameters – putting a large pot on a small burner is both inefficient and dangerous. A small heating zone will heat wide dishes unevenly and for a long time, in addition, heavy filled pots and pans can simply fall off a small burner if it is not made of glass ceramic. Therefore, pay attention to the difference in the diameters of the heating zones: it is convenient when they are either different or have a universal diameter of 24-26 cm.

Glass-ceramic tiles, including induction ones, are very convenient in this matter, as they are often equipped with several circuits – you can change the heating diameter depending on the dishes used. Sometimes the extended zone may even have an oval shape.

The type of heating is one of the most important characteristics, which primarily affects the performance of the stove.

Heating elements are always convex, which is why it is better to select dishes with a diameter suitable for the burner. On average, they heat up more slowly than tape and, especially, induction ones, and also cool slowly. In very budget devices, heating can occur unevenly.

In care, such burners are also more whimsical than glass ceramics. The spiral is not particularly convenient to clean, and even to wash out the food debris and smudges under it – all the more so, even despite the fact that in modern models the burners can be raised to clear the space under them.

 

Cast iron discs accumulate soot over time and are prone to rust. Around closed burners, the main cleaning is on the rims around the heating disc.

Hi-light – burners with tape heating elements made of energy-efficient alloys in the form of a thin spring laid in the form of a tape or “snake”. They are always used in glass-ceramic tiles, and the heating element is located directly under the burner. They heat up quite quickly, especially in comparison with heating elements, there is a stepwise adjustment of the heat supply. Such burners often have extended functionality – they are double-circuit with an extended heating zone, increased power for instant heating. Some devices have already set cooking programs, when selected, the stove itself selects the optimal power.

 

Induction is the most modern type of heating elements, which is fundamentally different from the previous ones in that it is not the stove that is heated here, but the dishes themselves. Under the working panel there are induction coils with a copper winding, which, thanks to electricity, form a magnetic field. Under the influence of this magnetic field, eddy currents occur in metal dishes, and heat is generated.

 

Induction has many advantages: a very fast heating rate, excellent energy efficiency and precise temperature control. The surface of the tile does not heat up during use, remaining completely safe and facilitating cleaning – escaped milk or boiled-down soup does not stick to the stove, any dirt can be easily removed with a damp cloth.

Of the minuses – induction cookers are noticeably more expensive than all the others, even modern glass-ceramic Hi-Light stoves. They can hum and buzz softly during operation. And, their most famous feature: the need to use special dishes. For contact with induction, only dishes made of ferromagnetic metal are needed – materials with high magnetic permeability, such as cast iron and steel. Pure aluminum, ceramics, copper will not work.

In this case, you will either have to buy special cookware labeled “for induction”, or take a special adapter – a disc for the stove, which allows you to use cookware from any material.

However, do not be afraid to search for induction cookware. In the early days of induction, pots and pans like these were really hard to find, and they cost an order of magnitude more than other cookware. Now the price division has practically disappeared, and induction cookware is sold everywhere.

The convenience of caring for it depends primarily on the coating of the plate itself. There are three standard types.

Stainless steel is rare. It is wear-resistant, but it can be scratched from cleaning with hard abrasives. More option for the unpretentious. If you are looking for a device for a summer residence or harsh conditions of use, stainless steel is a great option.

 

Enamel is a classic companion of all tiles on heating elements and in this case, along with stainless steel, there is no alternative. Enamel is prone to scratches and chips over time, due to which rust gradually forms and the aesthetic appearance is lost. However, with careful care, the enamel retains its properties for a long time.

 

Glass- ceramic is a modern solution in tiles with Hi-light burners and induction. The first thing people love about glass ceramics is convenience in every sense. Such burners are completely smooth, do not have any rims, extra bulges or seams, where dirt can clog and it is inconvenient to wash. And in general, the glass-ceramic material itself is very grateful – neither fat nor soot sticks to it, no rust forms. Unless scratches may appear over time, but it all depends on your accuracy. Again, there is no risk of knocking over hot dishes from the stove, since the surface is completely flat.

 

But glass ceramics are not suitable for sloppy conditions of use. The material is fragile, does not tolerate mechanical damage, falls and requires attention.

Power and functionality
How well the stove will warm up depends on its power. This parameter can vary from very economical models of less than 1 kW to powerful devices over 5 kW.

On average, spiral and cast iron tiles consume up to 1.2 kW per burner . Accordingly, for two burners – about 2 kW . Glass-ceramic ones are often more powerful. Among them, you can even find single-burner models for 2 kW. Usually, no more than 1–1.5 kW per burner is enough for comfortable cooking. If you like to cook quickly and at high temperatures – choose a more powerful device, but make sure that your sockets and electrical networks can withstand such a load.

The main functionality during cooking is determined primarily by the number of heating modes and the diameter of the burners.

The number of heat settings depends on the models. Glass ceramics can have up to 7–8 of them, since such burners heat up and cool down very quickly, and the difference in modes is noticeable. For spiral and disc burners, as a rule, 3-4 modes are sufficient.

Compact electric stoves have a rather simplified functionality. Among the features, for example, various protection systems can be distinguished. This can be a child lock on the panel (more often on glass-ceramic stoves), overheating protection or auto shutdown in case of overvoltage.

The type of device control usually differs from the design. So, disk and spiral tiles are usually controlled using clock (rotary) mechanisms, and glass ceramics are often equipped with a sensor or buttons.

Glass-ceramic stoves sometimes have a residual heat indicator . It shows in real time the degree of cooling of the burners after switching off. The indicator is on – the hotplate is still hot, off – it has cooled down to 50 ° C acceptable to the touch.

The timer allows you to automate and greatly simplify the cooking process – the stove will turn itself off after a specified period of time, and you will not need to remember the dish.
