A colorful snail found in Cuba has been named the beautiful three-legged mollusk this year. In online voting, this snail got 10,000 votes while the total number of votes was just over 16,000.
The decision was announced in a press release issued by the German research institute Schکنncenberg , stating that in this global beauty contest of molluscs, 50 species were initially selected, of which only 5 were final and Happened to the decisive stage .
Photographs of the five centenarians were then posted on the agency’s website and social media account. Scientists and consumers alike were asked to decide on the most beautiful of them all.
The online poll, which ran from February 25 to March 15, polled just over 16,000 votes, of which 10,092 got the colorful snail, making up 62% of all votes cast.
It is also called the “Cuban Colorful Snail” (Painted Cuban Sunil) due to its vibrant color and its presence in Cuba. However, its scientific name is Polymita picta .
It ranges in length from 20 to 30 millimeters, and is found only in the rainforests of the narrow coastal strip of eastern Cuba, in extremely dry places.
This snail is both male and female at the same time.
The presence of this snail is of special importance to the local forests and agriculture. As a result of the relentless deforestation and environmental degradation in Cuba, these beautiful snails are now in short supply and are on the verge of extinction.
The “Senkenberg” organization will also carry out genetic sequencing of this colorful snail as part of its “prize” for winning the World Beauty Contest, while investing in conservation efforts.
