Smartphone sensor that detects chemical constituents

Scientists have shortened a wide range of infrared sensors that can be used in smartphones for industrial, food and agricultural testing.

According to a report published in NatureCommunication, it is very easy to make which can quickly identify the chemical components in plastics and milk.

Our eye cells make us feel good about food. The red color of the strawberry indicates that it is ready to eat while the green strawberry is raw. But the human eye has its limits, and we cannot see ultraviolet or infrared. If we can see these lights, we can see a lot of pollution.
Kelly Heckler, a PhD student at Eindhoven University of Technology, and her colleagues have developed this state-of-the-art sensor that can fit into a normal phone. It is inspired by the eye of a sea animal called Mentus Shrimp, which instantly displays infrared and other lights that the human eye cannot see.

This sensor is very modern, easy to manufacture and also has a very low cost. But it has been under constant scrutiny for many years. It was developed by a startup called Menti Spectra. Compared to conventional spectrometers, it can detect contamination and fats in milk more effectively. It can also identify different types of plastics.

Mente spectra can be used in agriculture, process control or other purposes. For example, it can sense the ripening and nutrition of the fruit. The biggest feature is that it can be easily placed in a smartphone.
