According to foreign media, the death of a woman from the tsunami in Tonga has been confirmed. The woman is from Britain. Tonga has been cut off from the outside world since the volcanic eruption and tsunami.
Authorities in Tonga’s neighboring country of New Zealand say rescue flights are unlikely to land at Tonga’s airport due to thick smoke and ash clouds.
According to officials, the delivery of aid by ships is unlikely to take place in the next few days.
An underwater volcano erupted in Tonga on Saturday, sending horrific noises that were heard 800 km away in Fiji. Satellite imagery showed ash, steam and gas flames rising 5 km wide to 20 km.
Viral videos on social media showed large waves in residential areas near the coast, engulfing houses and buildings, and people running towards the high dunes.
