Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has announced that all girls’ schools across the country will be opened from March this year.
According to the International News Agency, the Deputy Minister of Information and Spokesman of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Zabihullah Mujahid told the AP in an interview that the arrangements for opening girls’ schools have entered the final stages.
Zabihullah Mujahid added that the Afghan New Year begins on March 21 and schools and colleges for girls and women will be opened from the beginning of the new year this year, but co-education will not be allowed at all.
Explaining the reason for the delay, the Taliban spokesman said, “We are not against girls ‘education. However, due to the abolition of mixed education system and changes in curriculum including arrangement of separate buildings, it took some time for girls’ schools to open.”
International powers have stepped up pressure on the Taliban government to reopen Afghanistan’s frozen funds by opening girls’ schools, allowing women to come to work and including all sections in the cabinet.
The Taliban had also promised international powers to open girls’ schools, but sought time to make arrangements. However, the return of women to jobs and an all-inclusive national government have not yet been implemented.
It should be noted that since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, the education of girls from 7th grade was banned, however, primary schools are open in some provinces.
