Why is a diesel engine better than a petrol engine?

Diesel engines are more efficient and have better performance than petrol engines. The diesel engine performs more efficiently than the amount of heat.

The diesel engine was invented in 1897 by the German engineer Rudolf Diesel. It is also easier to manufacture than a petrol engine. A petrol engine is also called a spark ignition engine because it has to burn the spark plug and fuel to start the engine while the diesel engine depends on compressed air. There is no need to burn spark plugs or fuel and the engine only starts to generate heat.

In other words you can say that the process of manufacturing both the engines is almost the same but the main difference is in introducing fuel in the engine and then converting it into energy.
Why is a diesel engine more expensive than a petrol engine in spite of the simple procedure.
