BEIJING: A section of a flyover on a Chinese highway collapsed, killing four people and injuring eight others.
At least four people were killed and eight others were injured when a bridge built on the expressway in Izhou City, Hubei Province, China, fell 1,640 feet below the road, according to the International News Agency.
Construction work was underway when the bridge collapsed. Workers were among those killed. Four trucks passing over the bridge also fell down while one car was crushed under the bridge and completely destroyed.
According to the preliminary investigation, three trucks weighing 198 tons were passing on the bridge during the construction work which was four times more than the allowable limit for crossing the bridge. Two trucks that fell off the bridge shattered.
The overweight bridge was built 11 years ago. Ministry of Transport officials are investigating the incident at the scene.
