SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook’s parent company Meta has shut down thousands of fake accounts that were involved in spying on thousands of important people due to mysterious activities.
Meta has called them cyber-mercenaries or digital looters targeting activists, politicians, journalists and other important figures from 100 countries. Interestingly, all of the accounts comprise seven companies, most of which are based in Israel.
Nathaniel Glaisher, head of security at Meta Company, said the “recruitment for digital espionage” industry was growing rapidly. People associated with it are relentlessly targeting the highest bidders. They also do hacking later. That’s why Meta has deleted 1,500 Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp accounts.
Facebook Pro accounts have been deleted that belonged to suspicious companies such as Cognite, Black Cube and Blue Hawk, and are headed by Cobb Web Technology. All these companies take money from different people and spy on other organizations and individuals.
In addition, suspicious accounts linked to companies from India, China and Macedonia have been deleted. According to Meta Company, deleting the account will discourage spy and surveillance companies.
One company, on the other hand, was of the view that it was monitoring criminals and ‘terrorists’. But according to the Meta Company, government critics, journalists, minorities, members of the opposition and human rights activists are the victims.
