Puerto Rico: About a year ago, there was a report that the chemicals in hair dye can cause breast cancer in women. The latest news is that the chemical ingredients in hair color, bleach and relaxers can cause low levels of sex hormones.
Make-up and products also contain phthalates, parabens, phenols and other toxic ingredients that can affect the endocrine (hormone) system. Then these chemicals can also affect the body’s metabolism. It has a small effect on pregnant mothers in particular.
Of concern are the side effects during pregnancy that can be detrimental to the unborn baby. Now, according to an article published in the journal Environmental Research, chemical ingredients can actually affect sex hormones, such as steroids.
For this, 1070 women between the ages of 18 and 40 were surveyed. All the women were from Puerto Rico. All women were medically and physically examined. At the same time, many questions were asked about jobs, lifestyle, and cosmetics, from nail polish to hair color.
Women who used hair dye, bleach and relaxers were found to have lower levels of the sex hormone steroids. This hormone also plays an important role in the development and pregnancy of the baby. Deficiency of these hormones can have negative effects on the development of the mother herself and especially the baby but more research is needed in this regard.
The experts also examined nine types of sex steroids and thyroid in the blood of pregnant women. Deficiencies can cause children to be underweight and to open their eyes prematurely. It is also possible that the child’s development may be severely affected.
Prior to further evidence, experts have advised women not to use any hair products during pregnancy and to stay away from other types of make-up.
