Pennsylvania: The largest comet in human history has been discovered, which is 100 to 200 kilometers wide and will pass close to our solar system in 2031.
University of Pennsylvania professor Gary Bernstein and his Ph.D. student Pedro Bernardinellai have jointly discovered it and have named it Bernstein Bernardinellai the comet. In 2031, it will be close to the Earth, which will require a telescope to see, although it is a thousand times larger than the number of comets we have seen.
The giant comet also has the technical name C / 2014 UN271. It has been circulating outside the solar system for millions of years. Therefore, it is also the farthest comet discovered from Earth, the proximity of which will help to understand the evolution of the solar system and the universe.
It was discovered with a four-meter-diameter telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory in Chile. The telescope also has a dark energy camera. The comet has been discovered by patiently analyzing six years of data from the telescope. The Doctor Energy Survey includes 400 scientists from seven countries and 25 organizations around the world.
Under the plan, 300 million galaxies visible in the dark of night are also being mapped. Thanks to this, many comets, icy bodies and other celestial bodies have also been observed. Most of them are beyond the planet Neptune and are considered to be outside the solar system.
The University of Illinois’ Supercomputing Center was assisted in sifting through the six-year data. During this time, the same astronomical body was seen 32 times and it was the same tail.
What are comets?
Comets are dust and ice balls. As they travel toward the sun, their ice melts to form long tails, which is why they are called comets. They also form with the solar system, but later with their very long and elliptical orbits, they are orbiting the solar system.
The most important part of an orbiting star is the nucleus, which consists of some solid ice, dust, and gas. Their tails can be millions or even millions of miles long. Similarly, the new comet also has two long tails. But its place of birth is also where other such bodies are formed and it is called the Oort cloud.
